General Cleaning Tips:

  • Clean your jewellery occasionally. An old soft toothbrush is ideal to get into mostly all the difficult nooks and corners. Rub gently with warm soapy water or purchase jewellery-cleaning fluid from your jeweller.
  • Settings and prongs get clogged up with soap and hand cream. Take them off before washing hands and using cream.
  • Cosmetics and fragrances can affect jewellery. Perfume or hairspray can discolour gold or make pearls turn yellow. Wear jewellery only after you have applied these products.
  • Never wear too much of jewellery as they might scratch against each other and cause abrasions.
  • Strong smelling foods e.g. fish & onions can tarnish gold and silver.
  • Wear jewellery as much as possible, as this keeps the metals bright.
  • Heat and hot water can loosen settings where an adhesive has been used. Pearl rings, earrings and pendants have this type of setting, so be careful with them.
  • Take off your jewellery especially rings when doing household chores or gardening. They could be damaged by knocking out stones or coming into contact with abrasive materials, which also discolor metal.

Clean Jewellery from Home…

With the span of time the polish and lustre of our favourite pieces of jewellery is lost somewhere. It is very important to clean our jewellery in order to retain its appearance and shine.

Don’t have time to go to the jeweler’s to get your jewellery cleaned? Here are some easy homemade remedies for cleaning your jewellery.

Use Toothpaste to Clean Jewelry
All you have to do is take an old toothbrush, squeeze some toothpaste on your jewelry, and start scrubbing away. The bubbles will look dirty, but this is simply the dirt that is coming off your jewelry. Once you rinse it off, your jewelry will look brand new.

Use Alcohol to Clean Jewelry
Use alcohol. Soak your jewelry for 1-2 minutes in a small jar of alcohol. Take it out and brush it for 2 minutes, soak for another 2 minutes, and then dry with a tissue.

Alcohol should be used only with hard jewelry like diamonds, rubies, and sapphires. Softer gems like emeralds, opals, amethyst, topaz, garnet, and moonstone should not be cleaned in this manner.

Use Salt to Clean Jewelry
Line the bottom of a bowl with a sheet of aluminum foil and fill with warm water. Add about 4 tablespoons of salt, and some quantity of liquid dish soap. Place your jewelry on top of the salt and get the tarnished piece of jewellery back to life again.
